Last week, HBHL hosted the third talk of the 2024-2025 Neurogenesis Speaker Series at the Neuro, featuring Dana Small and Yashar Zeighami.

Dana Small’s presentation, "The Interoceptive Origins of Reward," explored how biological signals are integrated to determine food choice, while Yashar Zeighami’s talk, "Fine-Tuning Neuroimaging Analysis to Reveal Hidden Insights," highlighted his research into the development of multi-scale computational models of brain anatomy.

A �󷢲�Ʊƽ̨-led team of researchers has gained insight into how parents of colour in the United States approach discussions with their children aimed at teaching them the skills they need to survive and thrive in a racially unequal society.

A key finding of the recent paper in Developmental Psychology is that parents are especially in need of information, support and guidance when it comes to preparing their children to face discrimination and bias.

A �󷢲�Ʊƽ̨ researcher has discovered that Guiengola, a 15^th century Zapotec site in southern Oaxaca, Mexico, which had been thought to be simply a fortress where soldiers were garrisoned, was in fact a sprawling, fortified city. It covered 360 hectares, with over 1,100 buildings, four kilometres of walls, a network of internal roads and a clearly organized urban layout with temples and communal spaces such as ballcourts, and the elites and commoners lived in separate neighbourhoods.

Professor Ragep Awarded Turkish Academy of Sciences Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities

Professor Jamil Ragep (Institute of Islamic Studies) is the recipient of the 2019 Turkish Academy of Sciences Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities. The award will be presented by the Turkish President Erdogan at a ceremony in Ankara on December 30.

Ragep is the Canada Research Chair in the History of Science in Islamic Societies.

APR 24, 2019 | Krzysztof Pelc has won the 2019 CBC Short Story Prize for his story Green Velvet. As the grand prize winner, Pelc will receive $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and a two-week writing residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Green Velvet was selected by the jury comprised of writers Esi Edugyan, Iain Reid and Lisa Moore. "Told in clear, confident prose, Green Velvet is an elegant, beautifully-shaped story, lit with a wry humour that tilts unpredictably to melancholy. It's full of whimsy and insight," the jury said in a statement.

Department of Linguistics cracks top 20 of QS World University Rankings by Subject

The QS World University Ranking has five subjects at �󷢲�Ʊƽ̨ ranked in the top 20 worldwide, including Linguistics which made a big jump from 38 to 17 and cracked the top 20.

Each of the subject rankings is compiled using four sources. The first two of these are QS’s global surveys of academics and employers, which are used to assess institutions’ international reputation in each subject. The second two indicators assess research impact, based on research citations per paper and h-index in the relevant subject.

Celebrating its 11th year, the Cundill History Prize announced a record number of submissions for 2018, with more than 400 titles accepted, up 25 percent from last year. Administered by the Faculty of Arts, the US$75,000 prize will be awarded by a distinguished jury of world-leading historians. Five jurors were recently named to judge the impressive list of titles, which includes authors from richly diverse backgrounds tackling subjects as varied as religion and war, feminism and natural disasters, global finance and music.
